What we focus on is one of the most important factors that determines our moods. We all have good and bad parts to our lives. The “good” parts are the ones that bring us up, make us feel good, happy, content. The “bad” parts are the ones that make us feel stressed, sad, angry, unsatisfied. The more we focus on positive, the better we feel.
An example I like to give is a cable TV wire. That’s the wire that goes into the back of a television set, and has all the channels in it. There could be 100 channels available, and each one has something else playing. But we can only watch one channel at a time on the screen. The screen is like our focus. We can only watch one channel at a time, and we can only focus on one thought at a time. If we choose a channel that make us happy, we’ll feel happy. If we choose a channel that makes us sad, stressed, angry, we’ll feel that way.
We can’t control much in our lives, but we can control what we focus our thoughts on (that’s one of the main things I work on with my patients.)
